Storyboard—Indulgence
Why did I write a menage romance that turned out to be a love triangle romance?
I’ll be honest, I read an insane number of ménage romance books before I wrote mine. I wanted to write a story that was hot and passionate, but I also wanted to make sure that it wasn’t only about fulfilling a fantasy, a.k.a., I didn’t want it to be only about the sex.
I wanted to make sure that my readers totally fall for both alpha males and I also wanted to write an engaging story that has my trademark twists and turns that my faithful readers have come to love.
The most challenging thing about writing a ménage romance book and including my cliffhangers was that delicate balance between offering enough context so that the cliffhanger is believable and unexpected, and also making sure that I was giving enough time in the relationship between the three main characters to blossom.
Added to that challenge was the fact that Billionaires’ Indulgence is the first book where I include the male’s point of view, but in this case I had to live in that head of two alpha men. It was crucially important for me that each one of them had their own distinct voice.
I agonized over this part of the writing process and in the end I collected quite a few new strands of grey hair, but I do believe the end result is pretty stellar. I think it’s quite clear that Jake and Hunter have quite different personalities and Allison response very differently to each one of them.
My Inspiration
Until recently, the only thing remotely country about me is like our country Queen Shania Twain, I’m Canadian.

I’m fully aware of country legends such as Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. And I’m also fully aware of some of the newer country star sensations such as Faith Hill and her hotter-than-hell husband Tim McGraw. That’s because I love music and I’ve heard of these superstars even though I don’t listen to their music.
I was never a fan of the reruns of the smash series Dallas (or the update Dallas version that came out a few years ago). When it comes to reruns of old shows, I’m more of a Dynasty type of girl. That said, I had associated cowboys, oil, large sprawling ranches and Texas to the iconic show. In fact, until recently I considered that southern state as the heartland of the “country culture”.

Then came country cooking star sensation, Paula Deen.
I remember discovering her while I was at a conference in California. I was attending a podcasting training in an attempt to build my other company. After a long day of networking and handshaking, I retreated to my hotel room, folded the bedspread, plopped myself onto the bed, grabbed the remote and I started surfing. I landed on one of my favorite all-time TV channels—Food TV, and there she was. The minute I heard her Southern drawl, it was over. I couldn’t get enough of the way she said “y’all”. Yeah, you could say that I was completely seduced… Well, I guess that was before the slightly politically incorrect gaffe she made which turned out to be an absolute media nightmare for her.

Other than the few things I’ve listed so far, I can’t say I knew much more than that when it comes to “country”.
I mean I was dreaming of buying cowgirl boots and doing a cool cowgirl retreat, but that was pretty much my country knowledge.
Inspiration from my readers
Gail Stroker
I must say that when it comes to research, Google is absolutely indispensable for any author. I mean how else would I know anything about an American state I never set foot in.
Another huge “research tool” I used before I started writing the series and during the entire time I was crafting Hunter and Jake’s sizzling tale is one of my faithful readers, Gail.
We’ve been friends on Facebook for a while and I’ve always been fascinated by the photos she shared of country music concerts she attended. It was clear she was all country and she was hard-core.
She consistently highlighted her favorite singers and I also remember how excited she was about the upcoming country music awards. Heck, it was playing while I was at the gym and she was the first person that popped into my mind. I thought to myself, “I bet Gail is watching this right now.”
This woman takes country very seriously and I love that about her.
During the two and a half months it took me to write the series, I paid particularly close attention to what Gail shared. I must confess that a lot of her photos came to life in my writing and allowed me to add a lot of depth to the story.
Muses
So far I’ve only had muses for two characters I’ve ever written about. I knew exactly who Ciara and Nikolaj from Forever Us were before I wrote the first word in the book. I had a clear image in my mind because I used real life celebrities and models as inspirations for both characters.
All of the other characters I’ve ever written about usually reside in my head.
It’s only when it comes time for the designer to start creating promotional material to let the world know my books that I have to search for a “face”.
Let’s be honest, we all have a “face” in mind when we’re reading a book. That’s why I was pretty stressed about the Indulgence because I didn’t want to ruin the fantasy for readers.
I really thought it was going to be a struggle to find an image that fitted Jake and Hunter, but to my surprise when I saw the following photos, it was a sure thing.
Both of these men do justice to the characters so well. I didn’t feel I needed to look any further.
Jake
The side grin and piercing blue eyes were the determining factor for this model and for this specific photo. Jake is a quiet storm, and I find the photo below epitomizes cocky confidence.

That said, my proofreader Chrissy, has claimed Zack Dudley as her Jake. When you look at the two men, there’s quite a resemblance.

Hunter
At 6’5″ tall, Hunter is all power and strength. The well-defined six-pack and strong shoulders and arms on this model screamed Hunter. When you combine that to his good looks, thick dark hair and piercing eyes, I felt this photo was a winner.

Allison
Believe it or not, Allison was a brunette from the beginning. In fact she was a brunette until it came time to find a cover.
It so happened that it was impossible for me to find a brunette with two guys that looked good and that had not been overused by other authors.
There are very few photo banks that sell photos of threesomes, which is why you’ll see the same ones over and over on Amazon. Unless you book a private photo session, which can cost you thousands of dollars, you’re stuck using what you can afford, which means other authors do the same thing as well.
After months of research, I finally found a photo that had not been overused at that time—that’s changed. Before buying it, I checked numerous times with my designer and he assured me it would be easy to Photoshop the image I had bought rights to.
The objective was simple: he needed to change the model’s original long blonde hair and transform her into a brunette.
After many reiterations, it became clear that it wasn’t going to happen. No matter how many times I tried to convince myself that the cover could pass, I would end up shaking my head and thinking, “she looks like a drag queen”.
In the end I vetoed it and asked my designer to keep the original hair color.
Alas, that meant I had to change every single instance I referred to Allison as a brunette and when I mentioned her brown hair.
To say that it was a little bit of a pain, would be an understatement, but there was no way I was going to publish a book with the following cover (original cover):

Riley
Riley is a real person.
I read Ree Drummond’s story a long time ago and I even followed her blog for a bit. Her journey from LA to becoming a cowboy’s wife definitely played a role in shaping this story. I remember thinking how amazing it was to move away from home for love!
The fact that I spoke at a very big conference a few years ago (there was like 3,000 women—it was insane!) where she was also speaking and that I was able to take a photo with her was also at the back of my mind when it came time to figure out who Allison’s boss was going to look like.
Of course, I’ve changed a lot of things in the writing process, but Riley is very tall and a redhead for a reason. I’m 5’9 and when I stood next to Ree for our photo, she towered me.

And FYI, the photo below is Ree’s real-life brother in law. I saw him on her blog while I was doing research for this Story Board. I nearly died. Need I say more???

The houses on the ranch
If you’ve notice in the story I refer to Jake’s home as a modern ranch. The reason being that he is a dotcom billionaire and I felt that I had to integrate that in his home. Usually when people are extremely wealthy, it’s well reflected in the house they live in.
Of course, I had to keep in mind that this story was happening in Colorado on a cattle ranch, so I couldn’t go too crazy, but I definitely made sure to inject a number of modern elements in the decor, hence, why Jake’s house and all the other houses on his property were decorated by the same California decorator who had designed his Silicone Valley home.
The photo below is my inspiration for the houses on Jake and Hunter’s property:

The Barn
How did I come up with the barn scene?
I didn’t see it coming at all.
In my original outline, is there is a scene near a barn, but it was Allison chasing a big pig and her ending up face down in the mud. There was nothing remotely sexy about that scene.
As I was writing, I realized that I wanted Jake and Allison to be together one more time before she was with Hunter. I also had to find a way for it to happen so that Jake wouldn’t have time to tell Hunter about it because I wanted Hunter to think he was the first to have Allison. That element of secrecy was really what brought the scene in the cabin between Hunter and Allison to life and that’s why the opening scene in book 3 is so saucy.
Since all the cowboys Jake and Hunter employ were already working and the most likely roaming around the ranch, there was only one place left—the barn.
I created a distraction to make sure Hunter was pre-occupied with an urgent matter and that left the door wide open for Jake.
This is the photo that inspired the scene where Jake is taming Romeo. Obviously, in the book, Jake is shirtless.

This is a photo that inspired the barn:

If you look to the lower right hand side of the photo you’ll notice a little nook. That was my inspiration for the setting where Jake ties up Allison and has his way with her:

The Rodeo in Book 4
I was watching Nicholas Sparks’ The Longest Ride because, let’s face it, the main actor is sizzling hot Scott Eastwood.
There was something about the energy, the buzz and the adrenaline of the rodeo that I found very powerful and after watching the movie, I decided I was going to add the scene where Hunter and Jake took Allison to her first rodeo. It was a way for the three of them to be together away from the ranch. I think the scene also shows how protective both Hunter and Jake are of Allison and how easily I could’ve taken the story in a different direction.
With that scene, I could’ve decided that all three of them were going to live in a perfect ménage a trois for the rest of time. The problem with that option is that it would most likely involve all three of them living in the same house.
Given the fact that Jake and Hunter have always made it a point not to bring women they were seeing to the ranch, I didn’t feel it made sense for all three of them to live together as a couple without sending the wrong message to Riley’s sons. If they weren’t willing to explain one woman sleeping over, how in the world were they going to explain living a polyamorous relationship with the same woman.
I decided to leverage the fact that Jake and Allison had been together twice before Hunter claimed Allison, and therefore I decided to pair Allison and Jake as a couple and break the threesome. Since I wanted this to be a happy ever after, it was important that Hunter was okay with that decision, which is why Hunter knew there was something more between his best friend and Riley’s assistant, even though neither of them were willing to admit to it.
Here’s the inspiration for Allison’s outfit. Obviously in the book, my outfit is a lot sexier.
